A Sacred Responsibility: Replanting the Future of Ayahuasca

Over the past two decades, Ayahuasca’s rising popularity has drawn thousands to the Amazon in search of healing, transformation, and connection. While this movement has opened hearts and minds worldwide, it has also led to a silent crisis—over 80% of Ayahuasca vines have been overharvested, unable to keep up with growing demand.

For centuries, these sacred plants thrived under the careful stewardship of Indigenous communities who understood the delicate balance of nature. But today, with more ceremonies, dietas, and visitors than ever before, that balance is breaking. The Yawanawá territory, home to 14 villages, now struggles to sustain the plants and traditions that have guided their people for generations.

This is not just an environmental issue—it’s a cultural one. Indigenous elders have been warning about this crisis for years. Shipibo leaders have spoken about the very real threat of Ayahuasca's extinction, urging the world to recognize the consequences of unchecked demand. Their message is clear: if we do not act now, this sacred medicine—and the traditions that protect it—may be lost.

The Amazon has endured centuries of extraction, from the devastation of the rubber industry to the suppression of Indigenous traditions. Now, in the era of the Psychedelic Renaissance, we stand at a crossroads: will this chapter be one of further depletion, or can we turn the tide—transforming an era of taking into an era of healing?

Replanting these sacred plants is more than an act of restoration—it is a commitment to reciprocity. With just $150,000, we can begin to reverse the damage, replanting Ayahuasca vines and Chacruna plants in the Yawanawá territory, ensuring that the land can sustain those who come seeking its medicine for generations to come.

The choice is ours. We can continue the cycle of depletion, or we can be part of a new story—one where the tides of destruction give way to renewal, where those who have received from the forest now give back.

Join us in replanting the Amazon and restoring balance—one vine at a time.

Our Vision.

We imagine a thriving Amazon rainforest, rich with biodiversity and alive with the sacred traditions of its Indigenous stewards.

  • Restoration: Actively replanting Ayahuasca and Chakruna to rebuild biodiversity.

  • Empowerment: Supporting the Yawanawá tribe to reclaim and sustain ancestral practices.

  • Education: Hosting Escola do Feitio (School of Medicine Making) to pass knowledge between generations.

  • Sustainability: Fostering long-term balance by preserving sacred traditions and promoting ecological regeneration.

The Problem.

Overharvesting, driven by the global surge in Ayahuasca ceremonies, has slashed vine populations by 80%, pushing this sacred species toward extinction. As demand for its transformative experience grows, Indigenous communities and their ancestral knowledge bear the brunt. Centuries of colonial exploitation have already scarred the Amazon’s people and ecosystems.

Without urgent, responsible actions—like sustainable cultivation and replanting— we risk losing not only a cornerstone of rainforest biodiversity, but also the cultural and spiritual heritage surrounding Ayahuasca.

The Figures.

  • Over the last two decades, unsustainable demand has led to the removal of 80% of Ayahuasca vines from their natural habitat.

  • Over $150,000 is needed to replant all 14 Yawanawá villages over the next few years.

  • It costs $15,000 per year to run the Escola de Feitio

  • It takes only $ 30,- to plant a vine

Without immediate action, we risk losing these plants and the invaluable wisdom they carry.

The Opportunity.

Plant A Vine offers a path to restore balance, biodiversity, and cultural heritage through collaboration:

  • Replanting Efforts: 500 Ayahuasca vines and 300 Chakruna plants for every Yawanawá village in the next years, after that we continue to plant in other territories as well

  • Cultural Revival: Escola do Feitio empowers Indigenous communities to preserve traditions.

  • Western Reciprocity: Transform your personal Ayahuasca journeys into acts of giving back by planting one vine for every ceremony you’ve taken part in.

The Numbers:

  • Annual Escola do Feitio Budget: $15,000

  • Replanting Budget Per Village: $12,500

  • Feitio House Completion Budget: $15,000

“This is a pivotal moment in the 'Psychedelic Renaissance' to create meaningful change”

Our efforts combine ecological restoration with cultural preservation:

  1. Replanting Sacred Plants: We have already planted over 2,200 Ayahuasca vines and 1200 Chakruna since 2015 in the Yawanawa territory and 200 vines in the territory of the Hunikuin.

  2. Feitio House: In 2022, we built a dedicated facility in Mutum, one of the Yawanawá villages, to prepare sacred medicines, fostering self-sufficiency.

  3. Escola do Feitio: An annual school dedicated to reviving the lost art of cooking Ayahuasca—suppressed by rubber tappers and missionaries—and preserving traditional medicine-making.

Through these projects, we create a foundation for sustainable practices, cultural resilience, and environmental harmony.
